LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Bellarmine 7-0 on Wednesday. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 3-0 on the season.
"We were really excited to get on the court and play today," said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "We've had a few matches canceled due to COVID protocols, so it was great to compete. We were able to get some exhibition matches in single and doubles, so it was good to see how the guys are progressing in the early portion of our schedule."
Louisville opened the day by sweeping doubles. The duo of Tin Chen and Sergio Hernandez 6-1 at No. 3 to give the Cards an early advantage. Matthew Fung and Fabien Salle followed with a 6-3 win against Cole Groetsch and Evan Bottorff to seal the first point of the match. Alex Wesbrooks and Josh Howard-Tripp closed the doubles with a 6-1 decision against Paul Reynolds 6-3.
In singles action, Wesbrooks put the Cards on top 2-0 when he beat Franks 6-0, 6-2 on court six. Louisville extended its lead to 3-0 behind Salle's 6-2, 6-3 decision against Bottorff at the five-spot. Howard-Tripp's 6-0, 6-3 victory over Reynolds at No. 4 clinched the match. Tin Chen, No. 71 in the ITA preseason singles rankings topped Cole Groetsch 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 and Fabien Salle wrapped up singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Bergland on court two.
Louisville will return to action this weekend when the Cards travel to Auburn for a Sunday matchup.
