Auburn, Ala. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Auburn 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Yarbrough Tennis Center in their first outdoor match of the season. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-0.
"The guys showed a lot of character to fight back after losing the doubles point," said UofL head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "We are very happy for the win and ready to to build on it."
In doubles, the Auburn duo of Jan Galka and Tyler Stice took down Josh Howard Tripp and Alex Wesbrooks 6-3 on court three. Louisville responded with Tin Chen and Sergio Hernandez defeating Tom Wright and Maxwell Giddens 6-3 on court two.
The Tigers were able to secure the doubles point by taking the decisive match on court one with Tad Maclean and Finn Murgett defeating Matthew Fung and Fabien Salle 7-5. The Cardinal duo trailed to start the match 4-0 and were able to tie the match at 5-5.
To start singles, Fung swept Murgett on court five 6-3, 6-4 to tie the match at 1-1. On court two, Hernandez was in a heated battle against Stice. Hernandez cruised to victory in his first set, winning 6-2. His second set went to a tie breaker, where he prevailed 7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker) to give the Cardinals a 2-1 overall lead in the match.
After dropping his first set 6-4 on court one, No. 71 ranked Chen bounced back to beat Tim Dollman 6-2, 6-1 to extend Louisville's lead
3-1 in the match. Howard-Tripp clinched the match for the Cardinals with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 win against Tad Maclean on court four.
The Cardinals will play host to in-state rival Kentucky for the Battle of the Bluegrass next Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
