Louisville's Strong Defensive Effort Comes up Short against No. 2 Duke
October 28, 2021 | Women's Soccer
The Cardinals limited the Blue Devils to just three shots on goal, but fell 1-0.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's soccer's strong defensive effort came up just short as they fell 1-0 to No. 2 Duke on senior day at Lynn Stadium.
Â
Louisville moves to 7-7-2 on the year and 3-6-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Duke improves to 13-2-1 and 7-2-1 in league play.
Â
Both teams had chances in the early minutes, but could not convert.
Â
Delaney Snyder got behind the Duke defense and had a one-on-one opportunity with goalkeeper Ruthie Jones, but her touch was strong which moved her out of scoring range and she was unable to get off a shot.
Â
A few minutes later, the Blue Devils had their chance when Michelle Cooper beat Louisville goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos to the ball and had a free shot at the net, but she rushed her shot and it sailed wide.
Â
In the 36th minute, Duke's Cooper took advantage of another scoring opportunity when she beat Kouzelos and found the top right corner of the net and Louisville went into the locker room at half trailing 1-0.
Â
The Cardinals kept the Blue Devils off the board the entire second half and nearly got the equalizer in the 82nd minute when Jones left the net, which provided Nina Nicosia with a shot but it was blocked by Duke defender Katie Groff.
Â
Savina Zamborini had a shot from distance following the Louisville corner, but it sailed high and the Cardinals fell 1-0.
Â
Duke ended the match with 11 shots and three on goal, while Louisville had six shots and one on goal.
Â
Gabby Kouzelos finished with two saves to give her 257 for her illustrious career.
