Cardinals Set for ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday
October 28, 2021 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams will travel to South Bend, Ind. for the 2021 ACC Championships on Friday, Oct. 29. The women's 6K race will start at 10:10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K at 11 a.m.
Both races will be streamed live by the ACC Network with the Packer and Durham morning show from Burke Golf Course opening coverage at 7 a.m.
Following the conclusion of the men's race, All-ACC distinction will be awarded to the top 21 finishers from each race, while the top true freshman male and female will be named ACC Freshman of Year. ACC Runners of the Year and Coaches of the Year will be determined by a coaches' vote following the NCAA Championships.
No.2 N.C. State leads five ACC schools in the latest USTFCCA Women's National Coaches' Poll. No.10 Florida State, No.13 North Carolina, No.16 Syracuse and No.21 Notre Dame round out the ranked programs in the women's field. On the men's side, No.8 Notre Dame and No.19 Florida State enter the weekend ranked with four other members receiving votes.
"The ACC is one of the strongest cross-country conferences in the nation," said assistant coach Eric Heins. "We are looking forward to the challenge of competing against the best and excited for the opportunity to represent the conference this weekend."
At the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Oct. 16, freshman Ian Kibiwot posted the second-fastest split at the halfway point of the race and went on to place fifth. Kibiwot has been nothing short of excellent in 2021, recording two top-five finishes as the Cardinals' top-runner in three meets. Emma Bryant earned the top spot for the women, placing 11th with a personal-best 6K time of 20:55.0.
"We are coming off a strong team performance at Texas A&M, where both men's and women's teams gained a lot of confidence in their fitness as well as their ability to race in large competitive fields," Heins added. "I expect both teams to continue the trajectory that have been on throughout the year into the Championship season."
The Cardinals' postseason continues with the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Friday, Nov.12 at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky.
