Snider’s White Sox Stay Alive with 4-1 Game Five Victory
October 13, 2021 | Baseball
The White Sox trail 3-2 in the seven-game series.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Snider's White Sox picked up a 4-1 victory in game five of the University of Louisville baseball program's annual Pizza Bowl series Wednesday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Vrable's Yankees still lead the seven-game series 3-2 and will have a second chance to clinch the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
Pitching kept the bats silent for most of the day on Wednesday, with each side scratching a run across in the second inning. Brandon Anderson doubled home Jack Payton for the White Sox, while Eddie King Jr. drove in Ben Metzinger for the Yankees' run.
From there, it was four scoreless innings per side before the White Sox plated three in the seventh. Anderson picked up his second run-scoring hit of the game with a single to give the White Sox the lead before Ben Bianco added a RBI single of his own.
Evan Webster and Kaleb Corbett combined to retire the side in order in the bottom half of the seventh to complete the victory.
The two sides each got strong starts from Tate Kuehner and Will Koger. Both pitchers allowed just a single run in 3.2 innings. Kerry Wright and Cameron Robinson each worked multiple scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
ABOUT THE PIZZA BOWL
Upon his hiring as Louisville head coach in the summer of 2006, Dan McDonnell immediately created an atmosphere of competition throughout the Cardinals baseball program. Whether it's through conditioning in the Omaha Challenge, or in preseason scrimmages, McDonnell creates competitive situations to give his players numerous opportunities to prepare for what they will see during conference and postseason games.
One of the most effective ways McDonnell and his coaching staff can provide the Louisville players with those competitive, game-like situations is through the annual Pizza Bowl series. Following approximately six weeks of fall practice sessions, the Cardinals take to the field for what started as a one-game scrimmage in the fall of 2006 and has become an ultra-competitive three-game or five-game intra-squad series. The Pizza Bowl series has become an exciting and highly anticipated ending to the fall for Louisville coaches, players and fans.
