Louisville Men’s Soccer Drops Final Exhibition Match
September 19, 2020 | Men's Soccer
The Cardinals open the regular season Sept. 25 against Wake Forest at Lynn Stadium.
PITTSBURGH, PA. – Louisville concluded its exhibition slate with a 5-0 loss to Pittsburgh Saturday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Pittsburgh totaled 17 shots on the night compared to Louisville's four. Senior Jake Gelnovatch finished with three saves for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals struggled to maintain possession throughout the first half as the backline of the defense was consistently tested. Louisville's defense bent but did not break early on, as the Cardinals were able to preserve a scoreless contest through 25 minutes.
The defensive stalemate would come to an end in the 26th minute as Pittsburgh's Alexander Dexter crossed the ball in front of the net that would be tapped in for a goal by Edward Kizza. Dexter would go on to add two goals of his own over the next five minutes, capping off an impressive first half that saw the Panthers record eight shots, five of which were on goal.
Louisville was able to put together more quality offensive sets throughout the second half, including one that resulted in an early shot on goal from sophomore Bradley Sample. Forward Pedro Fonseca drew a foul midway through the second half that resulted in a Cardinals penalty shot, however his attempt would deflect off both posts before ultimately staying out of the net.
In the end, the second half featured more of the same as the Panthers were able to find the back of the net two more times in 64th and 70th minutes.
Louisville will be back in action next week as the team opens its regular season Friday, Sept. 25th. The Cardinals will host Wake Forest in a non-conference contest inside Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium at 8:00 p.m. The match will be televised on the ACC Network.
