Checking in with Piper Roe
May 06, 2020 | Women's Volleyball
Virginia native is home and looking forward to her senior year.
Throughout the remainder of the 2020, we will check in with the players on the University of Louisville volleyball team as they complete their semesters online. This week we check in with Piper Roe. The redshirt-junior from Roanoke, Va., carries a 3.992 in chemistry.
Q: What are you doing with yourself during your free time?Â
A: I am doing a lot of studying! If you know me, no one will be surprised by this LOL. I have also been getting more into yoga; it is something I have always really enjoyed but haven't always had the extra time for with all of my school and athletic commitments.
Â
Q: What are your thoughts on spring season being cancelled?
A: It was hard to believe that spring season was cancelled because I know our team loves the work we get to put in at this time of the year even though we are not in season (spring is when we get to really start preparing for our season in the fall), and we love watching the spring sports get to compete as well. However, I think we all realize that the decision was to keep everyone as safe as possible. It's definitely sad to see the awesome athletes and teams out there, at UofL and other places, that do not get to compete this spring season.
Â
Q: What did you have originally planned for spring break and what are you actually doing?
A: For spring break, I went home and visit my family but then I had to go I back to Louisville because I needed more clothes and other things. I only packed for a one week spring break and now I needed stuff for basically the rest of the semester!Â
Â
Q: How are you continuing to stay in shape during this time?
A: I have a workout program from our team strength coach that I have been following. Now that gyms are closed, I have had to get a little creative in regard to finding things to use as weights and finding space to do all of my exercises and other activities. I've tried to get outside when I can as well to walk and run and enjoy the nice weather when we have it.
Â
Q: Your impressions on the spring season up to this point?
A: My team's spring season was going very well. We were making awesome progress in the weight room and on the court, and I know everyone was getting really excited about it because we could just feel how this progress was setting us up so well for preseason and our season in the fall.
Â
Q: What will you miss most about being on campus?
A: I miss seeing all of my teammates and our coaches and other staff. We always have so much fun as a program and being stuck away from everyone is really making me miss all of them!
Â
Q: Have you and your teammates been keeping in contact through all of this and how?
A: My team has been keeping in touch through our team group message, Zoom, team FaceTimes, team snapchat, etc. We all have been talking to each other pretty consistently throughout this whole time.
Â
Q: Is there anything you would like to say to Card Nation?
A: Card Nation, thank you all for always being so supportive of our teams, our athletes, and our athletic department overall! I know you all will show the teams who have had their seasons cut short the love and support they need and deserve right now, and I know when athletics start back up that you will continue to make this the best athletic community there is!
Â
Q: What is your favorite memory of this season (for VB use this year… the 2019 season)?
A: My favorite memory of this 2019 season was our NCAA tournament run! The feelings after the WKU win to go to the sweet sixteen and after the Texas win to go to the elite eight are indescribable and something I will, quite literally, never forget.
Â
Q: Are you home or on campus? (Either way, what have you been doing? what have you binged watched, hobbies, etc.)
A: I have been watching a lot of Friends and Suits; I have seen Friends so many time and I will always love it, but Suits is my new favorite show (I just started watching this semester)! I've been to Zoom meetings with the team, Facetiming, and group texting a lot of teammates to catch up and get some social interaction since everyone is in different places and is social distancing because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
Q: How have people in your family been directly affected by the virus?
A: The biggest effect I have seen has been on my sister. She is graduating from her dietetics graduate program this May and because of the novel coronavirus outbreaks she has had some of her final rotations cancelled.
Â
Â
Q: If you could say something to the basketball players/swimmers/indoor track athletes who do not get a senior season back and missed their championship what would it be?
A: Even though your all's season was cut short and it's hard to imagine not fully finishing out your collegiate athletic career, that does not take anything away from all you have accomplished up to this point. Everyone is going to remember the work you put in to get to where you are and all of the championships helped put your team in a position to compete for.
