Louisville, Ky – In the fourth episode of Where Are They Now, University of Louisville assistant swimming coach Kameron Chastain spoke with former Cardinals and siblings Peyton ('10) and Lacey ('12) Bobo about their time on the team together and what they are doing now.
Â
For Peyton, coming to Louisville was an opportunity to leave his home state of Texas and swim collegiately.
Â
He said "It just felt like a really good place to be. We were on of his (Arthur Albiero) first recruiting classes and I felt like he was still trying to figure out to make the team a team and it was really fun being a part of that."
Â
Lacey was in the same boat wanting to experience living out of state and was looking for a program where the men and women trained closely together. Peyton ended up being her deciding factor as she almost signed with LSU but ultimately chose UofL because of the family culture. Being on the team together was a great experience for the Bobos.
Â
"Being able to lean on Peyton a little bit was definitely fun. We're super close, so getting to see each other swim for two more years and hit some highs and go to travel meets together was a really fun time," Lacey said of their time together.
Â
Academically, Peyton and Lacey had vastly different journeys at Louisville. Peyton started premed as a math major, was doing fine in all the classes but decided to drop the premed. As he was taking a math class he had asked himself 'why are we doing all this math,' and never got an answer, so he switched to physics.
Â
He said, "I joke my degree is in advanced problem solving. That's part of the reason I ended up teaching. I really enjoy coaching, but I didn't know how to put my degree to use."
Â
For Lacey, she went into the business school and started and finished as a marketing major with a communications minor. She wanted to do something in the advertising world and worked for Scoppechio Advertising in Louisville for about three and a half years after she graduated.
Â
Today, both Peyton and Lacey have moved back to their home state of Texas and are living and working in their hometown of Austin. Peyton is currently a mathematics teacher for the Austin Independent School District and is the head swimming coach at Bowie High School. Lacey is currently an account supervisor for GSD&M advertising agency where she manages internal and client relationships and is also a steward of the brands they represent.
Â
When talking about their time on the team, both Peyton and Lacey shared their sentiments of feeling Louisville swimming finally being put on the map as they were on the teams that won Louisville its first Big East swimming championships.
Â
"I just remember it coming down to every point. We were just trying to get every single person to score as many points every time. It wasn't necessarily about how fast you went, did you put your hand on the wall before the guy next to you. That started at practice. You earned that spot to be on the travel team, you earned that spot to be score. It was a competition. It was really fun to fight for that, to have the honor to represent the team in conference," Peyton said of his time on the time.
Â
His favorite memories from his time on the team come from having Lacey as a "racing partner" in some of the hardest drills he can remember doing.
Â
Lacey's favorite memory comes from her sophomore year as the women's swimming team became the first Louisville women's team to finally beat Tennessee in a women's sport.
Â
"College sports is a really awesome thing. I think college sports and college swimming specifically is a different ball game. You go from being a club swimmer and its totally an individual sport and when you get into college it is such a different mind shift that you are swimming for a team. When you switch that mindset, it brings something else out and the energy becomes way more infectious," Lacey said as a final thought on her time at UofL as well as a word to the current team and to recruits.
