Checking in With Emily Scott

Middle Blocker is staying busy and fit at home in Wisconsin
Throughout the remainder of the 2020 spring semester, we will check in with the players on the University of Louisville volleyball team as they complete their semesters online. This week we check in with Emily Scott. The junior from Appleton, Wisc. carries a 3.535 in Exercise Science. She played in 52 sets with 67 kills, 20 digs and 48 blocks last season.
Q: What are you doing with yourself during your free time?Â
A: It's a challenge to stay busy when you don't have many options, especially outside of your home. In my free time I will do homework and study, I will clean, I do a bit of artwork, or read a book. Although, even though I am not actively practicing volleyball at the moment, I like to keep my mind active by watching video of games and practices. I also make sure that I am still physically in shape by working out each day. I have been helping watch kids and moving my aunt into her new house. I am quite busy with finals and the end of the year projects.Â
Q: What did you have originally planned for the spring and what are you actually doing?
A: I decided to fly back home to Wisconsin for Spring Break and stayed there for a weak. But, once all sports activities were cancelled and classes were moved to online I contemplated staying at home. I actually decided to drive back to school because I still had a few friends there and all my books were there as well, but then I eventually went back to Wisconsin to be close to my family.
Q: How are you continuing to stay in shape during this time?
A: At this time, I continue to stay in shape in multiple ways. I stay mentally in shape by watching film of practice and games. I stay in physical shape by doing at-home workouts each day and I also like to get out and go for a run or a walk.
Q: Your impressions on the spring season up to this point?
A: Up to the point that it was canceled, the spring season was proving to be one of our best. Our gym was full of energy at every practice and the level of play was extremely competitive. The team was focused and driven in both the gym and the weight room.
Q: What do you miss about the Ville?
A: What I miss most is seeing my teammates, coaches, and friends each day. I am grateful to be able to spend some quality time with my family, but I do find myself often missing everyone that I saw daily while at school.
Â
Q: Have you and your teammates been keeping in contact through all of this and how?
A: Despite the separation, I keep in close contact with my teammates and coaches through various means of communication. Text, Zoom, cell phone calls, FaceTime, and even Volleymetrics (the program we use to study film) allow me to reach out to everyone. I text with teammates every day to see how they're doing and to just chat for a while.
Â
Q: What are your thoughts on spring season being cancelled?
A: It's disappointing that spring practice was canceled because we were really making a lot of great improvements and had so much more to improve on and learn as well. I give the university the credit it deserves for keeping its students and their health first priority given the unique circumstances. Even though this is a large obstacle, we are still keeping our sights set on our goals for this upcoming season and are making the most of our current situation to help us reach those goals.
Q: If you could say something to the basketball players/swimmers/indoor track athletes who do not get a senior season back and missed their championship what would it be?
A: To all the Seniors who had their Spring sports cancelled: my heart aches for all of you. I can't imagine not getting that last chance to compete in a championship, let alone a good majority of your season. Senior year is supposed to be a highlight and something that you'll be able to look back on in 10 years with fond memories. It is easy to become bitter about everything that has transpired, but that is when you must remember that you have an army standing behind you to give you all the support you need. It is a difficult time, but we will make it through together.
Q: What would you say to the spring sports who lost a whole season? Â
A: To all the Spring sports that lost their season; don't lose your drive, determination, or your hunger to compete. It is so mentally taxing to be told you've prepared for so long to not get the chance to reap the benefits, but don't lose focus of the goal. Make sure to rely on each other within your team and even others to get through this time as well.
Q: Is there anything you would like to say to Card Nation?
A: Card Nation: Please continue to give the University, the staff, and the students as much support as you can. This is an extremely difficult time and anything as simple as even a word or two of encouragement can help immensely. The amazing thing is that I know that we all will stick together no matter what to help us through this tough time.
Â
Q: What is your favorite memory of this season (for VB use this year… the 2019 season)?
A: My favorite memory from this last 2019 season was the moment when we won the fifth set against WKU in the 2nd round of the tournament to make it to the Sweet 16. So many emotions flowed out all at once. We were excited because we had beaten an in-state rival and felt immense pride as well for our team and university. There were also many tears because it was so rewarding to finally be able to see our hard work pay off since our sights were set on making the Sweet 16 (and higher) the entire season. It was just a great moment to be a Cardinal and to be able to share it with my coaches and teammates.
Â
Q: Â What is your favorite memory as a Cardinal?Â
A: My favorite memory as a Cardinal is something for me that is extremely hard to decide. Making the Sweet 16 and the Elite 8 are at the top of my list, but there was one moment that really hit deep. Our team received the honor of being recognized at one of the men's basketball games at the KFC Yum! Center. When we all walked onto that court it was like no other feeling. At that moment, I felt so much love and support from Card Nation and it was amazing to see how proud they were of us. I also happened to be standing next to our head coach, Dani Busboom Kelly, who had tears welling in her eyes because she felt the exact same way.
Â
Q: How have people in your family been directly affected by the virus?
A: Luckily, nobody in my family has been affected by the Coronavirus. Everyone is healthy and happy and making the best of the current confined situation.
Q: What are you doing with yourself during your free time?Â
