
Cardinals Take Third at ACC Championships

Louisville wins two golds, two silvers and a bronze on final night of racing
The University of Louisville Cardinals finished third at the 2020 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in the final night of competition that featured two golds, two silvers and a bronze for UofL.

NC State won its sixth straight ACC crown with 1250 points followed by Virginia (1089), Louisville (1066.5), Virginia Tech (898), Florida State (812.5) Notre Dame( 803.5), UNC (630.5), Pitt (520), Georgia Tech (506), Duke (421), Miami (197) and Boston College (134). Â Â NC State's Coleman Stewart was named ACC Swimmer of the Meet.

In the first event, Notre Dame's  Zach Yeadon made it a distance sweep, winning the 1650 freestyle with a 14:27.93 to set an ACC meet record. UofL's Hayden Curley posted a 15:04.55 for eighth in the mile. Colton Paulson stopped the clock at 15:13.44 for 14th place just ahead of teammate Ilia Sibirtsev, who turned in a 15:21.45 for 18th place. T.C. Smith finished 19th with a time of 15:23.47.

NC State senior Coleman Stewart broke the ACC meet and conference mark with the winning time of 1:37.71 in the 200 backstroke. Louisville's Mitchell Whyte won silver and his time of 1:39.46 is fourth best in the nation this season. Also scoring for the Cardinals was Nikolaos Sofianidis, who touched fourth in the B-final of the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:43.47

NC State's Nyls Korstanje won gold in the 100 freestyle with a time of 42.13. Florida State's Peter Varjasi won silver with a time of 42.68 and Louisville's Andrej Barna and UNC's Will Messenger tied for the bronze medal, boarding a time of 42.69. Cardinal Haridi Sameh was into the wall seventh with a time of 43.03 to score A-final points for UofL.

Cardinal Evgenii Somov  won gold in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 1:52.54, the second fastest time in school history, to complete the sweep of the stroke. Teammate Daniel Sos finished eighth also in the A-final with a time of 1:55.67.

Nick Albiero won gold in the 200 butterfly with the blazing fast time of 1:38.65, just a tenth of a second shy of the overall conference record. The time ranks him No. 1 in the nation, set a school record, a meet record and gave him an NCAA A-cut. That's Albiero 2nd-straight victory in this event, completes the fly sweep this week. Teammate Jarrett Jones scored for the Cardinals with a second place finish in the C-final, going 1:44.74.

The Cardinal won silver the in the 400 Free Relay with a 2:50.02 put up by Nicolas Albiero (42.36), Andrej Barna (42.81), Evgenii Somov (42.66) and Haridi Sameh (52.19). The event was won by NC State cut two and a half seconds off their entry time with a 2:48.03.
