Louisville opens 2020 season with a 7-0 shutout against Dayton

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the 2020 dual match season with a 7-0 win over Dayton Sunday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The win also marked Rodrigo da Silva's first career victory as the Cardinals' head coach.

"It was great to start the season on a positive note," said da Silva. "I thought the guys played well today. It's early, so we still have a lot to work on, but we are looking forward to continuing to grow throughout the season."

UofL started the match by taking the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Junior Tin Chen and freshman Matthew Fung gave the Cards an early edge with their 6-3 win over Dayton's Will Harper and Connor Bruce at the three-spot. On court two, sophomore Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Daniel Fainblum fell behind 3-0, but rallied to beat Steven Karl and Georgi Mavrodiev 6-4 to clinch the first point of the match.

In singles action, sophomore Fabien Salle gave Louisville a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Joe DeMarco at No. 3. Freshman Randy Wilson followed with a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Oliver Dunne at the six-spot. The match was decided on court two where sophomore Sergio Hernandez beat Steven Karl 6-0, 6-4.

Sophomore David Mizrahi added to the lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Will Harper at No. 5. On court one, Chen defeated Bruce 6-1 in the first set, but fell 6-1 in the second before taking the third set 6-2. Fainblum wrapped up the match at the four-spot with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 win against Matt DeMarco.

The Cardinals (1-0) will play host to Bellarmine in the second half of Sunday's season-opening doubleheader.
