Louisville Baseball Summer Update – July 10

The Cardinals have 19 student-athletes on summer ball assignments.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team has 19 student-athletes on summer ball assignments across five summer leagues and the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
Below are some of the highlights from July 3-9 games.
USA Baseball Collegiate National Team
Reid Detmers (Player Page)
4 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 3 K
Detmers got the ball for game four of the 8th Annual USA vs. Cuba International Friendship Series on July 5 in Cary, N.C. The left-hander allowed just a single run on three hits in four innings of work, striking out three.
Lucas Dunn (Player Page)
.400 (2-for-5)
Dunn picked up a pair of hits against Cuba in the final game of the series July 6 in Durham, N.C. Dunn also started game two against Chinese Taipei on Wednesday, but the game was suspended in the fourth inning due to rain.
Cape Cod League
Jared Poland – Bourne Braves (Player Page)
.307 (4-for-13), 2 2B, 4 RBI
Poland tallied four hits, two for extra bases, and four RBIs in three games over the last week. He also turned in a scoreless inning on the mound July 3 against Wareham.
Zach Britton – Orleans Firebirds (Player Page)
.276 (8-for-29), 4 2B, 7 RBI, 4 R
Britton picked up eight hits, including four doubles, to go along with seven RBIs and four runs scored in seven games for the Firebirds.
Northwoods League
Andrew Benefield – Madison Mallards (Player Page)
Benefield was selected to represent the Great Lakes Division in the Northwoods League All-Star Game scheduled for July 16 in Waterloo, Iowa. Benefield is hitting .311 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs in 37 games this summer.
Trey Leonard – Waterloo Bucks (Player Page)
.250 (5-for-20), 2 R, HR, 4 RBI
Leonard reached base in five of his six games played over the last seven days, including his first home run of the summer July 6 against Rochester.
Prospect League
Tim Borden II – Quincy Gems (Player Page)
.222 (4-for-18), 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI
Borden had four hits in four games over the last week, notching a pair of doubles and his second long ball with the Gems.
New England League
Garrett Schmeltz – Newport Gulls (Player Page)
5.2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 7 K
Schmeltz made a pair of appearances, including a start, and didn't allow a run in 5.2 innings. The southpaw pitched four scoreless frames in a start July 9 against Danbury and tallied a victory with 1.2 scoreless innings July 5 against Sanford. Schmeltz has not given up a run in 7.2 innings this summer with 10 strikeouts.
