Young officially assumes her new role as the head coach of the women's golf program today
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville's Whitney Young officially takes over today, July 1, as the head coach of the women's golf program. The hiring had been previously announced by UofL Vice-President/Director of Athletics Vince Tyra and approved by the UofL Athletic Association Board of Directors in December, with a start date of July 1, following the retirement of the team's previous head coach Courtney Trimble.
"I'm excited to announce the formal hiring of Whitney Young as our new women's golf head coach," Tyra said. "We gave a preliminary announcement a few months ago, but now it's official."
One of the most decorated golfers from the state of Kentucky and in Southeastern Conference history, Young originally joined Louisville's coaching staff in 2017 as an assistant coach under Trimble. Young becomes only the third head coach in the program's 20-year history.
"I want to take the time to thank Courtney Trimble, Vince Tyra, and the athletic department for giving me this great opportunity," Young said. "As a native from Glasgow, Kentucky, I am so honored to be the new head coach at the University of Louisville. What a great opportunity to be able to get the top recruits out of the state of Kentucky. That's something I'm going to strive for and make sure we keep them right here at the University of Louisville."
In two seasons with Young on staff, the Cardinals have five tournament victories and back-to-back wins over Kentucky in the Battle of the Bluegrass State. UofL reached the NCAA postseason in both seasons, and advanced to the 2018 NCAA Championship as a team for the second time in school history.
"This team is a big reason why I want to be the head coach here. They are just amazing women, amazing people. They would do anything for you, but on top of that, they're top athletes and that's what we're looking for here at the University of Louisville. We want to continue to hold our program to the highest of standards, excel in the classroom, and win conference and national championships."
"We're very happy to have her in this role for many reasons," Tyra adds. "She's not only a very accomplished player in her own right, but she knows what it takes for a program to accomplish a lot. She is just a great person, a warm smile. She relates to the players, represents all the things that we want in our program, in particular this golf program."
Young came to Louisville after spending four seasons at Georgia, where she helped the program to three appearances at the NCAA Regional Championships, including a regional title in 2016 that led to an automatic berth at the NCAA Championships. She assisted the Bulldogs to six Women's Golf Coaches Association All-America distinctions and seven all-conference selections, including the 2016 SEC Freshman of the Year.
Young enjoyed an exceptional collegiate playing career at Georgia that included three top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships. She aided the Bulldogs to 10 team tournament titles, most notably the 2007 SEC Championship. She is one of just three Georgia and seven SEC golfers to earn first team all-SEC honors four times.
Statistically, Young compiled the sixth-best career stroke average in Georgia history. She clubbed a 74.21 over 129 rounds, posting scores even or below par in 32 rounds. She had six rounds in the 60s.
Upon her graduation from Georgia with a degree in speech communications, Young continued her playing career in the professional ranks. She registered nine top-10 finishes in 47 starts on the FUTURES Tour from 2008-10. In 2009, Young won the Duramed Tour Championship with a 9-under-par 204. That same season, she finished sixth on the FUTURES Tour money list to earn her LPGA Tour card for the 2010 campaign.
