Margot Bechadergue, Delaney Shah, Olivia Cason. Lauren Hartlage, and Mairead Martin set to compete
NEWCASTLE, Northern Ireland - Five current or former University of Louisville women's golfers will compete in the 116th Ladies British Open Amateur Championship, which runs from June 11-15 at the Royal County Down Golf Club.
Among the five Cardinals entered in the Championship is Mairead Martin, who will be competing about four hours from her hometown of Kanturk, Ireland. "I'm really excited to start playing this week, especially on home turf," Martin says. "It's really fun to have all my family here and the team. It's going to be a challenge on this high-level golf course, but I'm ready for the challenge and really confident in my game after all the links practice last week."
The list also includes three-time All-ACC honoree Lauren Hartlage, along with current teammates Margot Bechadergue and Delaney Shah, and recent UofL graduate Olivia Cason. Hartlage, Martin, Cason, and Linda Trockel also played in the event last summer.
"I am very excited to be able to play in the British Amateur again this year," Hartlage said, who also competed in the 115th Women's Amateur last June. "The course will be a great test and is a true links style. Being able to come down a week early and play courses around Ireland with the team along with playing in the event last year will help me a lot this week as the course is very different from what we are used to playing at home."
Live scoring for the tournament will be available online here.
The first stage of the Championship involves 144 players each of whom plays two rounds of 18 holes. The 64 lowest scores over the 36 holes will compete in the match play stage of the Championship. Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes, including the Final.
Founded in 1893 by the Ladies' Golf Union, the Women's Amateur was first played at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire. Along with the US Women's Amateur Golf Championship, it is considered the highest honour in women's amateur golf.
