The 800 free relay team of Nicolas Albiero, Zach Harting, Bartosz Piszczorowicz and Colton Paulson placed sixth with a 6:11.36.
Austin, Texas – The University of Louisville men's swimming and diving team opened the NCAA Championships in record fashion, breaking the school record and posting the highest NCAA finish in program history in the 800 freestyle relay on Wednesday evening at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
"What an awesome way to start the meet with a new school record," said UofL head coach Arthur Albiero. "We have a bunch of young guys in this relay with two freshmen, I think it says a lot about the way they went about preparing here and about the leadership from the upper classmen. It's a good way to start the meet, highest finish in school history, so we'll take that. Now we're going to get ready for the next session, which is the only one that matters."
Nicolas Albiero (1:33.47), Zach Harting (1:31.14), Bartosz Piszczorowicz (1:33.90) and Colton Paulson (1:32.85) combined for a time of 6:11.36 to finish sixth overall and break their own school record set at the ACC Championships in February.
The Cards' sixth place showing was also the highest 800 free relay finish in program history, surpassing their seventh place finishes in 2018 and 2016.
Louisville will enter the second day of competition in sixth place with 26 points, trailing Texas (40), NC State (34), California (32), Indiana (30) and Florida (28).
The Cardinals will be back in action at the NCAA Championships tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. ET for the prelims of the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 400 medley relay.
