The 200 free relay team of Andrej Barna, Mihalis Deliyiannis, Nicolas Albiero and Tanner Cummings broke the program record by over a half-second.
AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Louisville men's swimming and diving team competed in three finals and set a new 200 free relay school record on the second night of competition at the NCAA Championships inside the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
"It's another great day at the office, I love the way that our team is competing," said UofL head coach Arthur Albiero. "I believe that's the most points we've ever scored on day two. Our relays stepped up big time with two school records today. Our 200 free relay was monumental, we dropped a full second from this morning. In the medley relay, we came ready to play this morning and put up our school record. With this field, you have to be ready and we did a phenomenal job. To finish fifth here, we'll take that. That's one of our better places and we're excited. We're grateful for today and we'll be ready for tomorrow."
The Cards' top finish came in the final event of the evening as Nicolas Albiero (45.26), Evgenii Somov (51.68), Zach Harting (44.41) and Andrej Barna (42.10) combined to finish fifth with a time of 3:03.45, marking the fourth straight year Louisville has earned All-American honors in the event.
Louisville also put together a strong performance in the 200 free relay as Barna (19.39), Mihalis Deliyiannis (18.83), Albiero (18.98) and Tanner Cummings (19.17) set a new school record with a time of 1:16.37, finishing 10th overall and dropping nearly a full second from the preliminaries.
The quartet earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in the event and their time handily surpassed the previous UofL record of 1:17.03 set at last year's NCAA Championships. The Cards' 10th place finish was also the program's highest since 2014.
Barna was the Cards' sole individual competitor of the evening. The junior swam to a time of 19.30 in the 50 free, placing 14th and earning Honorable Mention All-American honors for the second consecutive season.
After two days of competition, the Cardinals remain in sixth place with 71 points, trailing California (212), Texas (188), Indiana (155), NC State (136) and Florida (76).
The Cards will be back in action at NCAAs tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. ET for the prelims of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 200 medley relay.
