Cards and Irish will wrap up the series Sunday at 12 p.m.
The University of Louisville softball team lost a pair of ACC games, both by a score of 9-1, to Notre Dame on Saturday at Melissa Cook Stadium. The teams will wrap up the series Sunday at 12 p.m.
Â
Notre Dame 9- Louisville 1 (6 inn.)
Senior Megan Hensley reached in all three of her plate appearances with a double and two walks and sophomore Jordyn Wolfe registered a stolen base and scored a run in the series-opening game against the Irish.
Â
Notre Dame (18-9, 3-2 ACC) got on the scoreboard early with three runs in the first. After Katie Marino's single, Abby Sweet and Melissa Rochford were hit by pitches to load the bases for MK Bonamy's three-run double.
Â
The Cardinals (19-10, 2-3) got a run back in the top of the first when freshman Rebecca Chung drew a walk and was lifted for pinch runner Jordyn Wolfe. After freshman Taylor Roby reached safely on an infield hit, a double steal pushed both runners into scoring position and an error on the play sent Wolfe home to make the score 3-1.
Â
A hit and a pair of errors added two more unearned runs for the Irish in the home half of the second, increasing the lead to 5-1.
Â
After a sacrifice fly by Sweet made the score 6-1 in the fourth, the Irish tacked on another run with a solo home run by Quinn Biggio in the fifth. A two-run sixth ended the game, bringing the final score to 9-1.
Â
Sophomore Danielle Watson took the loss, giving up three earned runs on two hits in the first inning.
Â
Payton Tidd (9-3) picked up the win, surrendering one earned run on four hits and striking out five.
Â
Notre Dame 9 – Louisville 1 (5 inn.)
In game two, the Irish took a 1-0 lead in the first. Ali Wester reached on an error, took second on Katie Marino's sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Melissa Rochford.
Â
The Cardinals countered with a run to tie the game in the fifth. Kyra Snyder earned a walk, Watson reached on an error and Newman's single loaded the bases for junior Celene Funke whose fielder's choice saw Snyder safe at the plate.
Â
An eight-run fifth inning put the game away for the Irish, who capitalized on five hits, two walks and a hit batter to take a 9-1 lead.
Â
Watson (6-8) took the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, on eight hits and striking out two in 4.0 innings. Melton and Newman each had a hit for the Cards who stranded six runners in the game.
