Cardinals Break Relay Record, Qualify for Three Finals

Lainey Visscher, Mallory Comerford, Avery Braunecker and Casey Fanz broke the UofL 200 free relay record during Thursday's prelims.
AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Louisville women's swimming team kicked off the second day of competition at the NCAA Championships in record fashion, eclipsing the program record in the 200 free relay and qualifying both relays and one individual swim to the 'A' final on Thursday morning at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
In the first event of prelims, Lainey Visscher (22.19), Mallory Comerford (20.94), Avery Braunecker (21.80) and Casey Fanz (21.79) broke the UofL record in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:26.92 to qualify second heading into the night's finals.
The Cardinals had three swimmers in the prelims of the 500 free, led by freshman Alena Kraus, who posted a time of 4:46.64. Sophie Cattermole finished in a time of 4:47.03, while Arina Openysheva recorded a 4:53.48.
Freshman Maria Sumida was the Cards' lone swimmer in the 200 IM, stopping the clock in a time of 2:01.38.
In her 50 free NCAA debut, Comerford qualified sixth into the A-final with a personal best time of 21.64. Visscher finished second in her heat of the 50 free and 21st overall with a 22.22.
The Cardinals qualified for their second relay A final of the day in the 400 medley relay as Alina Kendzior (51.89), Mariia Astashkina (59.68), Grace Oglesby (50.92) and Comerford (45.98) combined for a time of 3:28.47.
Michaela Sliney capped off the preliminary session with a score of 250.10 on the 1-meter in her first career NCAA Championships.
The Cards will be back in action for tonight's finals at 6 p.m. ET.
