Lauren Hartlage finished 10-under par to capture the victory in Melbourne, Fla.
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Louisville women's golf team finished off a strong showing at the Moon Golf Invitational on Tuesday, finishing as the runner-up with Lauren Hartlage taking home the individual title. The tournament was played at Duran Golf Club.
Louisville turned in a team score of 1-over par 289 in the final round to finish at 6-under (858) for the tournament. UCF (849) pulled away for the victory, while Oklahoma (859) and Campbell (859) tied for third. Maryland (862) rounded out the top five.
"It was a solid week for our team as we begin the spring season and always great to be in the last group with a chance to win the tournament," head coach Courtney Trimble said. "We played really well all week, but stumbled a little coming down the stretch and it ended up costing us the tournament.
"We will continue to learn from the mistakes and it is very exciting to be in good form early in the season and shows us what we are capable of. Lauren (Hartlage) played extremely solid and I am very happy she came out on top as the individual champion."
Lauren Hartlage carded a final round 2-under par 70 to finish the tournament at 10-under overall for the individual victory. The junior birdied the 18th hole on Tuesday for what turned out to be the difference in the one-stroke win. For the week, Hartlage led the field with 17 birdies.
The victory is the second of Hartlage's career to go with a win at the 2017 Cardinal Cup.
"This week, I played some very solid golf," Hartlage said. "I was able to get my putter rolling which helped me make a lot of birdies. I had been working a lot on my short game these past few weeks which really helped with my scoring around the greens.
"Overall, I am very pleased with how we started the spring season. Our team has worked very hard and even though we didn't come out with the victory, we have a lot of positives to take from this week."
Mairead Martin fired a final round of 3-under 69 to get herself back to even par for the tournament. The freshman posted a bogey-free round on Tuesday and finished tied for 23rd overall.
Lauren Thibodeau and Olivia Cason tied for 42nd at 4-over par. Cason carded four birdies on her way to 2-over 74, while Thibodeau had three holes in red figures in her 4-over round of 76.
Linda Trockel rounded out the team portion of the scoring in 54th place with a final round of 76.
Meghan Nay closed out the tournament tied with Trockel at 7-over par, turning in a 1-over 73 Tuesday in her best round of the week. Margot Bechadergue shot 75 in the final round and tied for 73rd, while Delaney Shah wrapped up in 80th after a round of 81.
The runner-up showing for the Cardinals was their fourth top-three finish in six tournaments this season. Louisville will be back on the course March 15-16 for the Tar Heel Classic in Casa De Campo, Dominican Republic.
