Cardinals Primed for ACC Championships

The Louisville women will compete for an ACC championship in Greensboro, N.C. from Wednesday through Saturday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After months of preparation, the University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team kicks off the championship season on Wednesday at the ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C. The No. 19 Cardinal women will compete in both swimming and diving, while the No. 8 men will compete solely in diving.
 
Competition is slated to begin on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. with the men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter preliminaries. Swimming action will begin on Wednesday evening at 5:15 and continue through Saturday.
 
Aside from Wednesday, preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. each morning, followed by finals at 6 p.m. The top-24 swimmers and the top-eight divers from the morning session will advance to finals each evening. Scores from the men's diving events will be added to the final scores from the Men's ACC Championships, which will take place Feb. 27 – March 2.
 
About the Cardinals
Louisville was the runner-up at last year's ACC Championships, its best finish in program history. Three Cardinals won a combined six individual titles, led by Mallory Comerford who won each of her events (100 Free/200 Free/500 Free) and was crowned ACC Championships MVP. Grace Oglesby swept both butterfly races and Mariia Astashkina claimed the 200 breast title.
 
The Cardinals' 400 medley relay comprised of Alina Kendzior, Morgan Friesen, Oglesby and Comerford also won gold at ACCs and will look to stay atop the podium at this year's meet.
 
In diving, Molly Fears returns to the ACC Championships as the 1-meter bronze medalist and has already surpassed her score from last year's meet this season.
 
Heading into the meet, the Cardinals boast a number of swims that rank among the top-10 nationally. Comerford leads the way with the No. 3 times in the 100 (46.96) and 200 free (1:42.79), the No. 6 time in the 100 fly (50.94) and No. 7 ranking in the 50 free (21.88). Grace Oglesby holds the No. 4 rankings in the both the 100 (50.75) and 200 fly (1:52.64). Louisville also ranks in the top-10 in each of the five relays, highlighted by the fourth-ranked 400 medley relay.
 
Scouting the Competition
NC State enters the meet as the top ranked team, checking in at No. 4 in the final CSCAA/TYR poll. Defending ACC Champion Virginia follows just behind the Wolfpack with the No. 5 ranking.
 
No. 16 Notre Dame and No. 12 Duke will also look to improve upon their respective fifth and sixth place finishes last year. North Carolina, who finished fourth in 2018, rounds out the ranked teams at No. 21.
