Cardinal Fall 3-2 to Syracuse

Aiko Jones notches 18 kills
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Aiko Jones had 18 kills and 10 digs but the University of Louisville volleyball team fell 3-2 at Syracuse Sunday afternoon.

UofL moves to 15-7 and 8-4 in the ACC. The Cards hit .146 with seven blocks and eight aces. Anna Stevenson added 13 kills and three blocks. The Orange were lead by Polina Shemanova, who had a school record 36 kills and three blocks.

In the first set, UofL used a 5-2 run early to go up 13-9 on a kill by Amaya Tillman and forced a Syracuse timeout. The Orange came out of the break with three straight points before a 4-1 run by the Cards was powered by a kill and an acie by Aiko Jones put UofL up 18-13. SU pushed back with a three point run on kills by Polina Shemanova and Ella Saada and a block by Yulia Yastrub to pull within two at 18-16. The Cards withstood a 3-0 run by the Orange sparked by a pair of kills by Shemanova to pull within one at 20-19. After the teams traded points, Amaya Tillman had a pair of kills and Aiko Jones threw down the set winner to give the Cards a 1-0 set lead. UofL hit .244 and had four blocks for the 25-23 win.

It was a see-saw battle in the second sets featuring long rallies and hard-hitting offense in the second set that saw 11 ties and six lead changes. Neither team ever had a lead of more than two points which came when Syracuse hit set point at 24-22 on a kill by Shemanova. Anna Stevenson had a kill and then a block to tie at 24 and force a SU timeout. The Orange had a hitting error to give UofL set point at 25-24 but the Cuse got a kill from Ella Saada to tie at 25. UofL setter Tori Dilfer won a joust to put the Cards up 26-25 but Syracuse ran off three straight with a Shemanova kill tipping the set to the Orange 28-26.

The Cards let the Orange run out to a 13-7 lead early in the third set and then had to play catch-up the rest of the set.  Up 21-12, Syracuse had to call timeout when the Cards ran off four straight to pull within five at 21-16 on an ace by Tori Dilfer. Syracuse moved to set point at 24-17 on a kill by Abby Casiano. Louisville staved off the loss three times before a setter dump by Elena Karakasi gave the Orange the 25-20 win and a 2-1 set lead.

In the fourth set, UofL moved out to a 13-5 lead early. Aiko Jones was hurt on the next play and Syracuse took advantage of the loss, pulling within four at 16-12 on an ace by Yulia Yastrub. The teams traded points until the Cards had a little breathing room with a four point lead after a kill by Claire Chaussee at 23-20. The Orange would score just once more until a kill by Emily Scott from the middle gave UofL the 25-21 win

The Orange flew out to a 5-1 lead in the fifth and the Cardinals could not recover even though they out-hit SU .231 to .139. Â The Cards fell 15-6.
