November 19, 2019 | Softball
Cards will play 17 home games, host ACC Championship
University of Louisville head softball coach Holly Aprile has released the 2020 schedule which includes 17 regular season games at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals' home field will also serve as the host site for the 2020 ACC Softball Championship May 6-9. UofL's upcoming slate features 13 teams which qualified for the 2019 NCAA tournament including Women's College World Series participants Alabama and Oklahoma State.
Â
"Our 2020 schedule is built for the character, toughness and resilience of this team," said Aprile. "We are going to be challenged day in and day out and the goal is to continually rise to the occasion. We start off with the NFCA DI Lead Off Classic which will be a really fun way to jump in and see where we stack up early in the season. Great teams want challenges and this team will be prepared and ready to fight."
Â
The Cardinals open season February 7-9 in Clearwater, Fla. at the NFCA Lead-Off Classic where they will take on Baylor and Texas State along with 2019 NCAA tournament teams Mississippi State, Missouri and Ole Miss, which finished last season at No. 15/14 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and the ESPN.com/USA Softball coaches' polls respectively.
Â
The following weekend, Louisville will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge where the Cards will continue their challenging slate against No. 20/18 Michigan and No. 25/22 Wisconsin.
Â
The third weekend of February will send the Cardinals to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Easton 'Bama Bash hosted by WCWS participant and fourth-ranked Alabama. Louisville will also take on Penn State and Wichita State in the tournament.
Â
The Cards will wrap up the month in the state of Oklahoma for the Oklahoma State/Tulsa Invitational where they will play a pair of contests against Oklahoma State which reached the 2019 Women's College World Series and finished the season ranked No. 6 in both coaches' polls. The tournament field also includes Illinois-Chicago, Tulsa and Oregon.
Â
March brings Louisville home for the first time as they host the Red and Black Challenge at Ulmer Stadium. That weekend, the Cards will take on No. 14/16 Northwestern in a rematch of the 2019 Regional finals which sent the Wildcats to a Super Regional. Louisville will also welcome Oakland, Illinois and Evansville to their home-opening tournament.
Â
The Cards will continue their home stand with a three-game series against Boston College in both teams' ACC opener before hitting the road for seven straight contests. Louisville will continue league play at ninth-ranked Florida State the following weekend with a midweek game at Indiana. The Cardinals will conclude the month of March with a three-game set at Duke.
Â
Louisville will spend the first two weekends of April at Ulmer Stadium with a pair of ACC series against Pittsburgh and 2019 NCAA tournament participant Notre Dame before hitting the road for a midweek matchup at Lipscomb and then resuming league play at Virginia.
Â
The Cardinals will return home to face North Carolina State and celebrate senior weekend in their final regular season series at Ulmer Stadium. After a midweek trip to Lexington, Ky. to face No. 16/15 Kentucky in its final non-conference matchup of the season, UofL will wrap up the regular season at Syracuse.
