Cards improve to 10-1 on the season, matching the best start in program history
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The sixth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team got goals from three different players en route to its third straight shutout and fifth of the season in a 3-0 victory over Penn State Sunday at Trager Stadium.
Â
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 10-1 on the season, matching the best start in program history, last accomplished in 1977.
Â
"Just a great weekend overall," said UofL field hockey coach Justine Sowry. "Today in particular, when you come up against Penn State a perineal power house and legendary coach. I was really looking forward to playing against these guys. They are a very talented young team, but we played pretty well for our second game with two tough games this weekend. We came out ready to play and played some great hockey. In the second half they started putting pressure on us and we absorbed a lot of that pressure, but at the end of the day we played some pretty good field hockey and got the job done."
Junior Mercedes Pastor delivered her fifth goal of the season and dished out an assist, sophomores Erica Cooper and Biz Allgeier connected on their first goals of the season while redshirt junior Hollyn Barr collected six saves in the shutout.
Â
Cooper put the Cards on the scoreboard in the 12th minute of the game when she tipped a penalty corner shot by Pastor to give Louisville a 1-0 lead in the closing minutes of the first quarter.
Â
Louisville struck again midway through the second quarter when Pastor evaded two Nittany Lion defenders and ripped a reverse-stick shot from the left side of the circle to the top right corner of the cage to push the score to 2-0.
Â
The Cardinals took the 2-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Nittany Lions 7-4 and holding a 3-2 edge in penalty corners.
Â
After a scoreless third quarter, UofL capped the scoring with just under six minutes left in the game when Allgeier deflected a penalty corner shot by senior Bethany Russ for the 3-0 final.
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot Penn State 15-10 and held a 6-3 edge in corners as the Nittany Lions (2-8) were shut out for the first time this season. Brie Barraco tallied five stops in the contest.
