October 06, 2019 | Baseball
The Cardinals lost 5-3 against Estrellas Orientales in their first game in the Dominican Republic.
JUAN DOLIO, Dominican Republic – The University of Louisville baseball team took the field for the first time on Saturday, squaring off with Estrellas Orientales of the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM).
The Estrellas, the reigning LIDOM champion, picked up a 5-3 victory over the Cardinals on Saturday at Estadio Tetelo Vargas in San Pedro de Macorís.
Ben Bianco led the way for the Cardinals, going 3-for-3 at the plate, including a solo homer that tied the game at three in the top of the sixth. Alex Binelas, Zach Britton, Wyatt Stevenson and Tim Borden II also notched hits on the afternoon.
Luke Smith registered four innings in the start Saturday, allowing just one run on three hits. The righthander exited with a 2-1 lead after the Louisville offense plated a pair in the third.
Following a run in the bottom half of the second by EO, Jared Poland touched the plate on a passed ball to knot it up at one. Binelas then put the Cardinals in front with an opposite-field single that scored Tim Borden.
The Estrellas surged back into the lead with two in the fifth before Bianco's sixth-inning homer, and regained the lead for good with a run in the sixth.
Carter Lohman and Jared Poland each had scoreless outings out of the bullpen for the Cardinals.
Louisville will play two split-squad contests, including one against 16-time LIDOM champion Leones del Escogido, on Sunday morning at the Kansas City Royals Academy in Guerra.
CARDINALS VISIT LOCAL ORPHANAGE
Prior to Saturday's game, the Cardinals stopped at Pasitos de Jesus, an orphanage for girls in Boca Chica. The players and staff spent the morning interacting with the children, playing games, dancing, coloring and more before helping provide lunch and departing. The orphanage visit was a continuation of the community service portion of the trip in partnership with Score International.
