Cards improve to 9-1 on the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Junior Madison Walsh scored a pair of goals to help lead the sixth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 3-0 win against No. 20 Wake Forest in an ACC contest Friday evening at Trager Stadium.
Â
The Cards (9-1, 2-1 ACC) picked up their third straight win and fourth shutout of the season and are off to the best start since the 2016 season.
Â
"Very happy to get our second conference win," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We didn't have the greatest preparation and were very fatigued this week. So, for them to come out and be pretty energetic and show tremendous amount of urgency on both sides of the ball I was very happy with the performance. It was played a lot between the 25s we were very efficient in the circle so, we had some very nice attacking plays. Defensively we were pretty solid."
Â
Louisville got on the scoreboard with 2:04 left to play in the first quarter after being awarded the first penalty corner of the game. Senior Carter Ayars got the corner started and junior Meghan Schneider provided the stop for junior Mercedes Pastor who connected on her fourth goal of the season to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard.
Â
UofL took the 1-0 lead into halftime after holding a 4-2 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in corners.
Â
After the break, the Cards struck early in the third quarter when freshman Margot Lawn sent a feed in from the 25-yard line and Walsh redirected the ball past Wake Forest's Isla Bint, bringing the score to 2-0.
Â
Wake Forest (5-5, 0-2) increased its attack in the fourth quarter owning a 3-1 advantage in shots and corners, but the Cardinals capitalized on their only shot on goal to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Bethany Russ directed a reverse-stick cross from the left side of the circle to the right post where Walsh was waiting to deflect the ball into the cage for her sixth goal of the season.
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot Wake Forest 8-6 while the Demon Deacons held a 4-3 edge in corners.
Â
UofL will continue its six-game home stand on Sunday when the Cards play host to Penn State.
