Cards snap three-game win streak in first non-conference loss of the season
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The fifth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 2-1 in double overtime to host William & Mary Thursday evening.

Haley Hopkins' goal in the fourth minute of the second overtime period lifted the Tribe to a 2-1 win over the Cardinals. The loss halted a three-game win streak for Louisville (13-3).
Â
"A disappointing performance," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "The better team won tonight with better teamwork, ball handling and they took their opportunities when they needed to. Our players need to take extreme ownership in this loss, come together and regroup for a tough game on Saturday."
Â
The Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead when senior Carter Ayars converted on a penalty stroke attempt for her fifth goal of the season to put Louisville on the scoreboard at the 9:01 mark in the game.
Â

After a scoreless third quarter in which each team fired off three shots and drew two corners apiece, William & Mary (10-5) broke through with under five minutes remaining in regulation when Cara Menges scored on a cross from Christie van de Kamp.
Â
The game remained knotted at 1-1 through the closing minutes of the fourth quarter and the teams moved to a 7v7 sudden-victory overtime period. In regulation, the Cardinals outside the Tribe 13-6 and held a 5-2 edge in goals.
Â
Louisville opened the extra period with three shots and earned a penalty corner, but could not break through and the teams advanced to a second OT period.
Â
