McHenry Leads Cardinals in Sweep of Xavier

Cards hit .321 with nine aces for the sweep
Melanie McHenry had 15 kills, two aces and four digs to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-15, 25-14 sweep of Xavier Friday evening at the Stacey Clark Classic on the campus of Purdue University. It was the second match of the day for the Cardinals, who beat Lipscomb 3-1 in the morning match.Â

UofL, which improved its record to 6-2, hit .321 as a team with eight blocks, nine aces and 40 kills. Xavier, which drops to 1-6, hit -.014 with six blocks, three aces and 19 kills. The Cards got eight kills from freshman Claire Chaussee and six kills apiece from Jasmine Bennett and Emily Scott. Xavier was led by Audrey Adams' four kills and four blocks. UofL used .300 hitting and notched three blocks in the first set, getting five kills from Melanie McHenry en route to the 25-18 win. The Cards popped out to a 7-2 lead and never trailed. A kill by Wilma Rivera took the Cards to set point at 24-13 but the Musketeers managed to stave off set point five times before falling. Claire Chaussee added three kills and Natalie Palastro came off the bench for the Cards' only ace of the set.

Xavier fell behind 14-9 in the second set and could not withstand .462 Cardinal hitting as UofL slowly pulled away. During a 7-0 run by the Cards, Emily Scott had three kills and McHenry added a pair to go up 23-14. A kill by McHenry took UofL to set point before freshman Anaya Martin came off the bench to ace XU for the 25-15 win. Â The Musketeers hit -.087 in the set.
