
Schmid Posts Top-Five Finish at the Louisville Cardinals Invitational

Sophomore cards a 10-under-par 203 to finish third overall.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Matthias Schmid secured a top-five finish at the Louisville Cardinals Invitational on Sunday and led the University of Louisville men's golf team to a second-place finish in the team's season opener in Simpsonville, Ky.
Schmid carded a 10-under-par 203 in the tournament and finished third at the University of Louisville Golf Club. The sophomore shot an even-par 71 in the final round and earned the third top-five finish of his career.
He tied for third last year with an 18-under par 198 at the Warrior Princeville Invitational last fall.
With four golfers shooting even par or better in the final round, Louisville shot a 1-under-par for the afternoon to finish 17 strokes behind Duke, the tournament's overall winner with 37-under-par 815.
The Cardinals shot 20-under-par for the tournament, its best mark since firing a 21-under-par at the Bank of Tennessee Invitational last season.
Over the three-day tournament, the Cardinals posted scores of 268-281-283=832, the fourth-best 54-hole score in school history. Wake Forest was third at 13-under-par, while South Florida finished fourth with a total of 8-under-par and Mississippi State closed in fifth at 2-under-par.
Playing as an individual, Devin Morley posted a career high finish by shooting a 6-under-par 207 to finish in a tie for fifth.
Simon Zach was the lone UofL player to shoot under par, firing a 70 to secure his fifth top-10 finish of his career. Zach shot 64-75-70=209.
Playing in his first collegiate tournament, Jiri Zuska tied for 18th after carding a 1-under-par 212, shooting 66-73-73=212.
Trevor Johnson shot a 1-over-par 214 to tie for 27th and John Murphy closed out the top five by finishing in a tie for 38th after firing a 3-over-par 216.
The Cardinals return to action at the Wake Forest Invitational on Sept. 24-25 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
