Whitsett and Rouse lead the Cardinals with goals
PITTSBURGH – Behind a dominant performance on offense, the University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated Pitt 2-0 in their ACC opener on Saturday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 7-1-0 (1-0 ACC), while the Panthers fall to 4-3-1 (0-1).

"I'm very happy with our team's performance tonight, and glad we can open up the ACC season with three points on the road," said UofL head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes.

The Cardinals gained an early 1-0 edge over the Panthers as Brooklynn Rivers found Maisie Whitsett, who sent a loose ball past the keeper and into the back of the net just under five minutes into the match.

Despite a flurry of chances on offense, the Cardinals were unable to add to their one-goal advantage in the early-goings of the half. Emina Ekic nearly extended the Louisville lead at the 27-minute mark when she blew by three defenders, but her shot sailed just wide of the net.

The Cards continued to dominate on offense through the remainder of the half. Delaney Snyder had two consecutive scoring opportunities in the 34th and 35th minutes, however each of her shots were stopped by Pitt's Amaia Pena.

With less than 30 seconds remaining in the half, the Panthers earned a free kick but Juliana Vazquez's shot flew above the goal, allowing the Cardinals to maintain their 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Louisville finished the half with an 11-4 advantage in shots, while edging Pitt 3-1 in corners. Gabby Kouzelos recorded a save on the Panthers' lone shot on goal.

The Cardinals continued to apply pressure on offense, earning three corners within the first six minutes of the second half. In the 54th minute, Mollie Rouse collected a through ball from Arianna Ferraro and fired a shot into the goal to give Louisville a 2-0 lead.

Ekic nearly added to the Cards' lead just four minutes later, but her shot soared just above the left corner of the goal. Louisville added three more shots and a corner through the next 25 minutes, but Amaia halted all three scoring opportunities to keep the Cardinals from taking a three-goal lead.

Refusing to relent on offense, Louisville earned one final opportunity with a corner in the 84th minute, but Sarah Hernandez's shot narrowly missed the goal. The Cards maintained control as time ran out, securing the 2-0 victory over the Panthers.

Louisville kept the Panthers from getting a single shot off in the second half, finishing the game with an 18-4 edge in shots and 8-2 advantage in corners. Kouzelos registered one save on the evening, while Amaia tallied eight.

The Cards will be back in action on Thursday when they welcome Notre Dame to Lynn Stadium at 7 p.m.
