Cardinals sweep Central Florida

Sloan and McHenry pace Cardinal offense with 12 kills apiece
Melanie McHenry and Megan Sloan each had 12 kills to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-22, 25-18 sweep of the University of Central Florida in the first match of the University of Florida Bubly Invitational Friday afternoon in Gainesville.

UofL moves to 4-0 on the season and hit .362 with three aces and 10 blocks. UCF moves to 2-2 and hit .133 with three aces and four blocks. UoL got 10 kills from Jasmine Bennett, who added four blocks. Amanda Green had 6 kills and four blocks. Kelly O'Neil had a pair of aces and Molly Sauer had a match-high 19 digs.

In the first set, UofL did not have the lead until 14-13 when Amanda Green bounced one on the Knights. Â Â The Cards used .428 hitting and four blocks to hand UCF the 25-18 loss. Â Melanie McHenry led the UofL offense with four kills and Kelly O'Neil recorded four digs.

The Cards popped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set but the Knights managed to tie the score at 14 and then moved to 16-15 lead, sparking a Cardinal timeout. The Cards regained the lead at 17-16 when Megan Sloan had two straight kills.  A kill by Jasmine Bennett took the Cards to a 23-19 lead but the Knights reeled off three straight points to come within one at 23-22 and UofL was forced to burn its final timeout. The Cards responded with a kill and a block by Jasmine Bennett for the 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead in sets going into the break.

The Cards had an 18-7 lead in the third set and .049 hitting by UCF did not help the Knights in their comeback attempt. Two short runs still left them short as the Cards' kept UCF at arm's length despite the Knights scoring five straight points late before falling 25-18.

The Cardinals play No. 4-ranked Florida Gators on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m.
