Cardinals Fall to No. 4 Florida 3-1

Senior middle blocker Jasmine Bennett had 13 kills with six blocks but it was not enough as the University of Louisville volleyball team fell 3-1 to No. 4-ranked Florida Saturday evening in Gainesville.

UofL fell 25-20, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22 to suffer its first loss of the season at 4-1. Â Louisville hit .203 as a team with 10 blocks and three aces. The Cards got 14 kills from Melanie McHenry, who added a block. Megan Sloan added 11 kills and two blocks and setter Wilma Rivera had 40 assists. The Gators, who evened their record to 2-2, hit .291 with 10 blocks and were led by Thayer Hall's 14 kills. Â

In the first set, the Cards fell behind 7-3 early but ran off four straight to tie at eight. The teams traded points until the Gators were able to pull off a 7-2 run late after being tied at 18 for the 25-20 win. UofL hit .171 to UF's .308 but all other stats were nearly identical. Melanie McHenry had four kills to pace the Cards.

In the second set, the Cards popped out to a 6-3 lead early and then battled the Gators point for point. UofL was down 15-13 at the media break and then fell to 20-16 but ran off five straight points to tie at 21. Kills by Emily Scott and a booming kill from Melanie McHenry gave the Cards the 25-23 win. The Cardinals hit .346 for the set.

In the third set, the Gators powered to a 11-5 lead early. The Cardinals kept swinging and but could get no closer than six at 20-14. UF hit .281 in the set as they took the set score to 2-1 with the 25-18 win.

In the fourth set, Florida had its hands full as the Cards took a 13-9 lead early and had the lead until UF tied at 21 and then ran off four straight to get to set and match point at 24-21. Megan Sloan scored from the right side but a big swing from Holly Carlton gave Florida the win at 25-23.

The Cardinals face No. 7 USC Sunday at 1 p.m. in Gainesville.
