Dorcas Wasike and Emmanuel Cheboson set course records in respective races
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Powered by course records in both races, the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2018 seasons with victories in a dual meet against the University of Tennessee. In the women's three-mile race, junior Dorcas Wasike topped her winning mark from last season, taking first with a time of 17:14.94, while freshman Emmanuel Cheboson opened his UofL cross country career with a 20:14.40 time in the four-mile run.
"I was really impressed with the way both squads came out and worked today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "We have many things to improve upon over the coming weeks, but this was a terrific start to our season."
In the opening women's three-mile race, the Cards earned a second-consecutive win over the Volunteers, prevailing by a 26-29 margin. With her course-record performance, Wasike took first by nearly 25 seconds over runner-up Katie Thronson of Tennessee. The Cards grabbed the next two spots in the standings as sophomore Bailey Beery returned to the course with a third-place time of 17:41.59 and freshman Ivine Chemutai opened her cross country career with a fourth-place mark of 17:45.56. Elsewhere in the top 10, senior Caroline Gosser placed eighth at 18:34.96, while fellow senior Abigail Wright finished 10th with a time of 18:39.43.
After falling in last season's meeting, the Cardinals' men's team rode Cheboson and redshirt senior Chandler Austin's debut performances to a 26-31 victory in the four-mile race. Cheboson took first by a 33-second margin, with Austin placing second with a time of 20:47.42. Senior Daniel Fleace helped clinch the overall team victory as he took fourth with a time of 20:59.48, followed by sophomore Cameron Stephens in seventh place at 21:13.24. In the fifth scoring position, freshman Ryan Johnston opened his career with a 12th-place time of 21:55.73.
"My hat goes off to the University of Tennessee for maintaining a first-class course and putting together a first-class opening," said Cowper.
The Cardinals will now turn their attention to the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Vaughn's Gap Cross Country Course in Nashville, Tenn. The meet will open with the men's 8K at 9 a.m., followed by the women's 5K at 10 a.m. For more updates and information, follow Louisville cross country on Twitter at @UofLTrackXC and on Facebook.
