Men's team to run first 8K of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a pair of team wins in their opening dual meet at Tennessee, the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams head south again for the 15th Annual Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn. The meet will be hosted by Vanderbilt University on the Vaughn's Gap Cross Country Course at Percy Warner Park.
The Cardinals are returning to the race after a one-year absence. In 2016, the men's team finished sixth, while the women placed seventh.
"We're excited because we'll be able to put our full men's team out on the line. The men's race will be very competitive, and we look forward to seeing how those guys compete over their first 8K of the year," said head coach Dale Cowper. "The team result is really what we're looking to build upon from our victories down at the University of Tennessee.
The meet will begin with the men's 8K race at 9 a.m. CST, followed by the women's 5K at 10 a.m. CST. For the men, this will be their first 8K outing of the season, as they take on seven regionally-ranked schools, including Middle Tennessee, the No. 2 squad in the South region. In the later race, the women will face nine ranked programs. In total, 17 different schools will be represented in the two races.
"The larger field is definitely going to show a larger spread," said Cowper. "Our gap is going to be very important from our first through fifth runners this weekend. As we go through, we really want to see as small of a gap as we can."
In this week's USTFCCCA Southeast regional rankings, the Cards held steady in both polls, remaining at No. 6 in the women's tally and No. 14 on the men's list. Two weeks ago, at Tennessee, both the men's and women's team rode course records to season-opening victories. In the women's three-mile, junior Dorcas Wasike broke her previous mark with a time of 17:14.94, finishing 25 seconds ahead of the runner-up. The Cards placed two more in the top five as sophomore Bailey Beery placed third with a time of 17:41.59, while freshman Ivine Chemutai opened her career with a fourth-place mark of 17:45.56.
In the men's four-mile, freshman Emmanuel Cheboson debuted with a record time of 20:14.40, followed by senior transfer Chandler Austin's second-place mark of 20:47.42. Senior Daniel Fleace helped the Cards clinch the overall team victory as he took fourth with a time of 20:59.48.
