McDonnell and Tyra Recap Season, Look Ahead to Future
June 07, 2018 | Baseball
Louisville leads the nation with its 554 wins during McDonnell's 12 seasons as head coach
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville baseball head coach Dan McDonnell and director of athletics Vince Tyra met with reporters Thursday inside the Omaha Room at Jim Patterson Stadium to review the 2018 season and provide an update on the future of the program.
The Cardinals closed their season with a loss at No. 9 Texas Tech in the championship round of the NCAA Lubbock Regional. Louisville finished with a 45-19 record overall after advancing to the final round of an NCAA Regional for the seventh straight season. The Cardinals lead the nation with 554 wins in the last 12 seasons, an average of more than 46 wins per year. McDonnell, who will enter his 13th season at Louisville in 2019, has guided Louisville to four College World Series berths, seven NCAA Super Regional appearances, 11 NCAA Regional bids, eight regular season conference championships and two conference tournament titles with 36 All-Americans.Â
For the third straight season, Louisville had eight players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The eight Cardinals chosen in this year's draft (as well as 2016 and 2017) rank as the second highest total in school history trailing only the 10 players selected in 2010. Overall, Louisville has produced seven or more MLB Draft selections six times in the last nine years, including five of the last six (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018).
