Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff will join the 64-player field to compete for the NCAA singles title
The University of Louisville's Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff will compete in the 2018 NCAA Men's Tennis Division I Singles Championship which will be held May 23-28 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The draw will be released Tuesday evening, following the completion of the team championship.
The junior from Capbreton, France joins the 64-player field after being named to the alternate when the initial field was selected. Morin-Kougoucheff earned his second straight All-ACC second team selection after compiling a 19-10 overall record with a 13-5 mark at No. 1 in dual match play. He appeared in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings eight times throughout the season, reaching as high as No. 53 on April 17 and currently stands at No. 69.
"I am so happy for Chris," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "He becomes the program's ninth overall singles bid and sixth player to be selected for the NCAA Singles Championships. The record is still with Austen Childs who qualified all four years. Chris put so much work in last summer which elevated his play this season. He joins the elite list of UofL tennis greats of Brendan Burke, Michael Mather, Slavko Radman, Austen Childs and Sebastian Stiefelmeyer."
Morin-Kougoucheff will also compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship along with sophomore Parker Wynn.
"He also joins an even shorter list of Cardinal singles and doubles NCAA qualifiers of Radman and Childs," said Ecarma. "Childs also qualified twice in doubles. Chris has improved so much in his movement, margin of error, and transition game. He also strengthened his body to prevent his shoulder from being injured. He is our team's Most Improved Player."
