Virginia opened the scoring early behind Danni Ingraham's two-run homer in the first. She scored Allison Davis, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
The Cardinals answered in the home half of the inning when junior Sidney Melton earned a leadoff walk and proceeded to steal second for her 12th stolen base of the season. Freshman Maddy Newman followed with an infield single to set up Hensley's two-run double which evened the score at 2-2.
Louisville took a 5-2 lead in the third courtesy of Szydlowski's three-run home run. Senior Nicole Pufahl reached on a fielder's choice. Freshman Kyra Snyder singled and was lifted for pinch-runner freshman Catie Barber to bring up Szydlowski who crushed a shot over the left field fence for her second homer of the season.
The Cavaliers countered with five runs in the fourth inning. A hit by Erika Osherow and walks to Ashlee Davis and Madi Traver loaded the bases for Allison Davis who was hit by a pitch to bring Osherow home. Back-to-back doubles by Hayley Busby and Ingraham pushed Virginia ahead 7-5.
The Cards got the runs back in the bottom of the fourth when Melton led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a double by Newman. Sophomore Caitlin Ferguson's base hit put runners on the corners for Hensley's game-tying sacrifice fly.
UVA regained the lead for good with six runs in the fifth which featured Osherow's two-run homer and Ingraham's grand slam. Jennings got the frame started with a single to right field to set up Osherow's go-ahead hit. Ashlee Davis singled, Traver reached on an error and Allison Davis delivered a hit to load the bases for Ingraham who powered a shot over the left field fence for her second home run of the game to give the Cavaliers a 13-7 lead.
Louisville's offense continued in the fifth when consecutive hits by Szydlowski, senior Jenna Jordan and sophomore Celene Funke loaded the bases for Melton, who earned a walk to send Szydlowski home. Newman's fielder's choice plated pinch-runner Riley Schindler to bring the score to 13-9.
The Cavaliers responded with three unearned runs in the sixth to push the lead back to seven runs. A two-out bases-loaded error sent Ashlee Davis home and Busby's two-run single made it a 16-9 game.
