Hensley's Two-Home Runs Lead Cards Past Cavaliers
April 06, 2018 | Softball
Megan Hensley hit two home runs and collected four RBIs in Louisville's 14-7 win against Virginia
Â
In a game that featured three lead changes, senior Jenna Jordan went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Hensley finished 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs and freshman Maddy Newman drove in three runs to pace Louisville offensively. Freshman Kyra Snyder (1-0) picked up her first collegiate win after holding Virginia scoreless and striking out three while scattering three hits in four innings of relief.
Â
"I thought Megan did a great job for us offensively, and that's what I expected from her, she's a great hitter," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Kyra Snyder was also a big help for us today in the circle."
Â
The Cards (25-12, 5-5 ACC) jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when junior Sidney Melton delivered a leadoff hit and moved around to third on consecutive groundouts by freshman Maddy Newman and sophomore Caitlin Ferguson. An error on an attempt to throw her out at third sent Melton home to put Louisville on the scoreboard.
Â
The Cavaliers (11-26, 2-11) used four hits and a walk to put up a three-spot in the top of the third. Savana Avilla started the inning with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a fly out by Allison Davis. Hayley Busby's single evened the score at 1-1. Danni Ingraham doubled to place runners on second and third for Erika Osherow's two-out two-run single which put Virginia on top 3-1.
Â
Louisville countered with 11 runs in the home half of the third, capitalizing on five errors, three walks and four hits – including a three-run homer by Hensley. Jordan and Funke earned back-to-back walks and Melton's single loaded the bases for Newman who sent a hit up the middle. Jordan and Funke scored on the hit and an error on the play sent Melton home to pull the Cards ahead 4-3. Hensley's three-run homer plated Newman and Ferguson who had reached on an error. Another Virginia miscue put senior Nicole Pufahl on, Snyder walked and freshman Jordyn Wolfe reached on an error to set up Jordan's two-run single. Funke reached on an error to bring Jordan home and she eventually scored on Newman's groundout to extend Louisville's lead to 12-3.
Â
Virginia answered with four runs in the fifth. Kate Covington singled, Avilla walked to set up Davis' RBI double. Hayley Busby followed with a two-run shot over the left field to cut the lead to five runs.
Â
The Cards got a run back when Hensley led off the bottom of the fifth by smashing her second home run of the game over the left field fence to make the score 13-7.
Â
Louisville tacked on its final run in the sixth when Hensley singled and was lifted for pinch-runner senior Alison Szydlowski who took second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on Snyder's RBI hit.
Â
Erika Osherow (5-12) took the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, on four hits in two innings. Busby led the Cavaliers with two hits and four RBIs. Davis, Osherow and Lacy Smith also registered two hits as Virginia held a 12-10 edge in hits in the game.
