Brandon Lancaster picks up a singles win for the Cardinals
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 40 University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 6-1 to sixth-ranked North Carolina Friday evening in the first of two ACC weekend matches. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 14-7 overall and 4-4 in ACC play.
"UNC looks like they are playing a similar level that for them to the finals of the NCAA Tournament last season," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Our No. 3 doubles team had three match points and if we won the deuce point at 3-3 on No. 1 we would have won the doubles court. Parker and Brandon won the first sets, Clement was up 4-1 and Nicolas was up 5-4 so we made a push. But at the end they won most of the important points and earned the win. Coach Sam Paul does a great job year in year out."
Â
The Tar Heels gained the initial advantage in doubles with Benjamin Sigouin and Blaine Boyden's 6-2 win over Federico Gomez and Ciro Lampasas at No. 2. The No. 17 duo of Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn fought hard on court one, but North Carolina's fourth-ranked Robert Kelly and William Blumberg ultimately triumphed 7-5 to secure the doubles point for the Tar Heels. George Hedley and Fredrik Moe were knotted 5-5 with Simon Soendergaard and Mac Kiger at No. 3 before play was halted.
Â
Kiger increased the Tar Heels lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Clement Filho at No. 5 singles. On court one, No. 2 Blumberg defeated No. 61 Morin-Kougoucheff 6-3, 6-4 to extend the score to 3-0 in favor of the Tar Heels. Just minutes later, North Carolina's No. 119 Robert Kelly clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Gomez at No. 3.
Â
In other singles action, Brandon Lancaster topped Josh Peck 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 to put the Cards on the board. On court four, Boyden beat Nicolas Rouanet 7-5, 6-2.
Â
The final match of the evening was won by North Carolina's No. 29 Sigouin, who downed Wynn by a mark of 0-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-5) at the two-spot.
