Hedley Lifts Cards to 5-2 Win Over No. 18 Duke
April 08, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The Cardinals earned their first win over the Blue Devils in program history.
DURHAM, N.C. – George Hedley's 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Jason Lapidus lifted the No. 40 University of Louisville men's tennis team to an upset win over No. 18 Duke on Sunday afternoon at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. With the victory, the Cardinals (15-7, 5-4 ACC) posted their first-ever win over the Blue Devils.
"From the first shot hit this match was close," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "In the past three matches with Duke, it was like this and they won all of them. But today was different… After losing several tight matches to them, I think this is our program's first win ever over Duke so it feel's good. It definitely helps us in the ACC standings. We believe in our team a lot."
Duke's Catalin Mateas and Robert Levine earned the first win of the afternoon, topping Hedley and Fredrik Moe 6-4 on court three to give the Blue Devils the early doubles lead. Jason Lapidus and Sean Sculley captured the doubles point for Duke, topping Federico Gomez and Ciro Lampasas at No. 2 by a mark of 6-4. At the one-spot, No. 17 Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn battled back from a 5-3 deficit to even the score at 5-5 with Nick Stachowiak and Spencer Furman before play was suspended.
In singles, Gomez took down Duke's Furman in a 6-3, 6-4 decision on court three to knot the score at 1-1. Levine was able to regain the lead for the Blue Devils with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Nicolas Rouanet at No. 3. However, No. 120 quickly tied the score at 2-2 with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win over Stachowiak on court two.
Brandon Lancaster gave the Cardinals a 3-2 edge as he came from behind to defeat Sculley 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 on court five. Moments later, Hedley clinched the match for Louisville with his 6-3 third set victory over Lapidus at No. 6.
In the final match of the day, No. 61 Morin-Kougoucheff downed No. 99 Mateas 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to cap off the 5-2 upset for the Cardinals.
The Cards return to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on Friday for a 3 p.m. matchup against top-ranked Wake Forest.
