Men's Swimming Sends Eight to NCAAs
March 07, 2018 | Swimming & Diving
Eight swimmers in 15 events plus all five relays.
Following their runner-up finish at the ACC Championships, the University of Louisville men's swimming and diving team qualified eight swimmers to the 2018 NCAA Championships, which will be held on March 21-24 in Minneapolis, Minn.
Â
The Cardinals have eight swimmers entered in a combined 15 individual races, as well as all five relays. In addition to the individual qualifiers, four relay swimmers will make the trip to Minneapolis.
Â
Nicolas Albiero leads the Cardinals with three individual entries (100 back, 100 fly, and 200 fly). Albiero is coming off a breakout ACC Championships, where he hauled in seven total medals for Louisville, including a gold medal in the 200 fly. The freshman ranks among the top-eight in the 100 back and is seeded ninth in the 200 fly.
Â
Fellow freshman Evgenii Somov is another Cardinal to watch heading into the NCAA Championships. Somov swept the gold medals in both the 100 and 200 breast and is currently ranked ninth in the 200 and 11th in the 100 distance heading into the meet.
Â
Marcelo Acosta is also seeded in scoring position in both of his qualifying events, ranking eighth in the 1650 free and ninth in the 500 free. Acosta was the ACC bronze medalist in both distances. Other Cardinals seeded in the top-10 are ACC 400 IM silver medalist Etay Gurevich (10th) and ACC 100 breast silver medalist Carlos Claverie, who is seeded 10th in the 200 breast.
Â
All five of the Cardinals' relays are currently ranked within the top-16, highlighted by the fourth-seeded 200 medley relay. Louisville won gold in that event at the ACC Championships and is less than a half second back from top-ranked California.
