Cards' V4+ crew tops USC in Saturday finale
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – Following a difficult start in the morning session, the University of Louisville women's rowing team closed out the opening day of competition at the Pac-12 Challenge with a win against USC Saturday afternoon.
In the varsity four dual race, Louisville claimed victory over No. 12 USC with a time of 7:36.80. The Cardinals posted solid marks against the Trojans with a time of 6:34.10 in the V8+ and 6:42.60 in the 2V8+.
"There were a few challenges this morning that we scrambled to fix. We continued to adjust and had a much better showing this afternoon," said head coach Derek Copeland. "Historically, we have had a difficult time finding speed on Saturday evening when on the west coast. I am proud of the team for their ability to adapt on the fly and to show improvement in the afternoon session. The 2V8+ closed the gap on the group and the V4+ got a win."
Earlier in the day, the Cards faced No. 10 Stanford in dual races, with the Cardinal taking first in each contest. As with the afternoon session, the V4+ crew had the best showing, posting a time of 7:18.64 that was less than three seconds off the lead. The V8+ boat clocked in at 6:37.80, while the 2V8+ finished with a mark of 6:56.24.
The Cards will conclude action at the Pac-12 Challenge Sunday morning with three races against No. 2 California. Live results will be available on Twitter at @Pac12Challenge. Check GoCards.com for a full recap of Sunday's action.
