LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team picked up a pair of wins in the Red & Black Classic Friday at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals (13-4) defeated Maryland 4-1 in game one and followed with a 6-2 win against UAB in game two to push their win streak to six games. UofL will take on Miami (Ohio) Saturday at 3 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
Â
Louisville 4 – Maryland 1
Senior Nicole Pufahl went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while freshman Danielle Watson (10-3) registered a career-high eight strikeouts and scattered three hits in a complete game effort.
Â
The teams played through two scoreless innings before the Cards broke through with three runs. Sophomore Celene Funke and junior Sidney Melton drew back-to-back one-out walks and scored on Ferguson's double to deep right field. Senior Nicole Pufahl followed with an RBI single to plate Ferguson.
Â
The Terps (4-12) got on the scoreboard when Taylor Wilson opened the fifth inning with a home run over the right field fence to make the score 3-1.
Â
Louisville got the run back in the bottom of the sixth when Pufahl led off with a triple to right field and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Â
Maryland had another chance to score in the seventh when Anna Kufta singled and took second on an error. A second miscue sent her to third to put runners on the corners with no outs and bring the tying run to the plate. Watson got a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
Â
Sydney Golden (2-6) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits and striking out three in 6.0 innings of work.
Â
Louisville 6 – UAB 2
Senior Jamie Soles went 2-for-3 with an RBI while six different Cardinals scored en route to a 6-2 win over UAB.
Â
The Cardinals capitalized on four hits and two errors to put up five runs in the second inning. Senior Jenna Jordan delivered a one-out hit and freshman Kyra Snyder followed with a walk to set up senior Alison Szydlowski's RBI double. Sophomore Celene Funke beat the throw on an infield single that sent Snyder home. Szydlowski scored when junior Sidney Melton reached on an error. Ferguson connected on an RBI hit to plate Funke and Melton came home on a throwing error to give Louisville a 5-0 lead.
Â
The Cards added another run in the fifth. Pufahl led off with a double and scored on a single by Soles to increase the lead to 6-0.
Â
The Blazers (6-14) put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the sixth. Natalie Erwin led off with a triple and scored on Analyse Petree's base hit. Petree would eventually cross the plate on another Cardinal miscue to bring the score to 6-2.
Â
Megan Hensley (3-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and striking out one and did not issue a walk in 6.0 innings. Watson gave up one hit and struck out one in one inning of relief.
Â
Claire Blount (0-7) took the loss, surrendering five runs, four earned, on five hits in 3.0 innings. Petree paced the Blazers offensively with a 2-for-4, one run, one RBI performance at the plate.
"We got two wins on the day," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I thought we were very sloppy. I think in the first game - we didn't even show up… One positive thing about the first game is that Danielle (Watson) did a great job pitching for us. But what it really comes down it is that we've got to decide to play defense, and that clearly was very costly for us."
