Notre Dame clinches the series
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 3-1 to Notre Dame in an ACC contest Saturday at Ulmer Stadium. The teams will wrap up the series Sunday at 12 p.m. Admission is free.
Â
Notre Dame (18-8, 3-1 ACC) took an early lead with two runs in the second. Katie Marino drew a leadoff walk and MK Bonamy followed with a single up the middle. Both runners moved on Madison Heide's sacrifice bunt and scored on Ali Wester's two-out base hit.
Â
Louisville freshman Danielle Watson went on to retire the next 11 batters she faced before Cait Brooks delivered a one-out hit in the sixth. She took second on Ellie Rochford's single and would eventually score on a fly ball to centerfield.
Â
The Cardinals (20-7, 0-2) got on the scoreboard in the sixth when junior Megan Hensley connected on a one-out double. Freshman Catie Barber entered to run and came around to score on senior Nicole Pufahl's single to make it a 3-1 game.
Â
Watson (12-5) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out two in a complete game effort. Melton led the Cardinals with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.
Â
Katie Beriont (6-4) picked up the win after giving up one earned run on seven hits and striking out four in 6.0 innings. Alexis Holloway retired the Cardinals in order in the seventh to earn the save. Seven different players recorded hits for the Irish with Wester collecting two RBIs.
Â
"We really need to take control early," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I thought we played well defensively, other than one minor issue. Danielle did some good things on the mound. She also made some mistakes at crucial times and gave up hits. Those are things you go through as a freshman – as she learns she will only get better as the season goes on and in her career."
