Cards get hits from 10 different players as freshman Danielle Watson notches her first shutout
Â
Ten different players registered hits, junior Sidney Melton and senior Nicole Pufahl each scored three runs and senior Jenna Jordan drove in three as the Cardinals outhit the Blazers 13-3. Watson (9-3) struck out seven and scattered three hits in five innings.
Â
Louisville jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, when Melton singled, sophomore Caitlin Ferguson walked and senior Jamie Soles reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Pufahl followed with an RBI hit, junior Megan Hensley walked and Jordan delivered a sacrifice fly to put the Cards up 3-0. Pufahl crossed the plate when freshman Kyra Snyder reached on an error.
Â
In the second inning, Melton reached on a fielder's choice and eventually came home on Hensley's RBI single to push the lead to 5-0.
Â
The Cards took advantage of seven hits and one error to put up a seven-spot in the third. The inning was highlighted by Ferguson's two-run single and Pufahl's two-run double. Snyder added an RBI double, Soles collected a sacrifice fly and Melton drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 12-0 game.
Â
After a scoreless fourth inning, freshman Riley Schindler stepped up to the plate and connected on a home run in her first career at bat to increase the lead to 13-0. Junior Madison Cousineau followed with a single and was safe at second on Pufahl's fielder's choice. An error allowed Jordan to reach and load the bases. Cousineau scored on a wild pitch and Pufahl came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Madison Ciaccio to bring the final score to 15-0.
Â
UAB's best chance to score came in the fourth when Katelyn Prater walked, Haleigh Sisson reached on a error and Katlyn Sides singled to load the bases with two out, but a groundout to Ferguson ended the threat.
Â
Bailie Barnes (1-2) took the loss, allowing 15 runs, 10 earned, on 13 hits and striking out one in 4.0 innings.
Â
"I think one of the things that we liked was, obviously, Danielle came out and threw a great game for us," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Offensively, we did the things we wanted to do, we came out aggressive. I'm really excited for Riley Schindler who got her first at bat in college and it was a home run, and it was at home, so it couldn't get any better for her. We saw a lot of great things from a lot of players."
