Cards drop to 3-1 on the season
ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 2-0 to North Carolina in a non-conference matchup Saturday at the UCF Friends of Jaclyn Invitational. The Cardinals (3-1) will wrap up the weekend Sunday when they face Illinois at 9 a.m.
Â
Senior Alison Szydlowski and sophomore Caitlin Ferguson had two hits apiece to account for Louisville's four hits in Louisville's first shutout of the season. Junior Megan Hensley (1-1) took the loss, allowing two earn runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Â
In a game that featured four hits from each team, the Tar Heels (2-0) capitalized on a hit, three walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch to score a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Leah Murray delivered a bunt single and took second on a throwing error. Sierra Parkinson followed with a walk and Taylor Wike's sacrifice bunt moved the runners for Berlynne Delamora who was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Brittany Pickett earned an RBI walk to plate Murray and Parkinson crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Â
The Cardinals had an early opportunity to score when Ferguson led off the bottom of the first with a double and moved to third on freshman Kyra Snyder's groundout, but North Carolina starting pitcher Brittany Prickett retired the next two batters to stave off the threat. Louisville would again have runners in scoring position in the second and fourth innings, but could not capitalize.
Â
Pickett (2-0) picked up the win, allowing four hits and striking out three in a complete game effort. Murray went 2 for 4 with a run to pace the Tar Heels at the plate.
Â
"This was definitely a game where neither team was hitting each other's pitching very well," said UofL head coach Sandy Pearsall. "What it came down to basically was one bad inning where the walks came back to hurt us. North Carolina won by us putting them on base. Otherwise we might have been in a battle that could have lasted many innings. I thought we had some great defensive plays as well as some great execution offensively, but when we have people in scoring positon, we need to be aggressive and attack."
