Comerford Sets American Record at Short Course World Championships

The Cardinals collected three medals on the opening night of competition in Hangzhou.
HANGZHOU, China – Mallory Comerford's American Record in the 200 meter freestyle highlighted the first day of competition at the 14th FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships at the Hangzhou Olympic and International Expo Center on Tuesday evening.
After breaking the American Record in the preliminaries with a 1:52.52, Comerford lowered her mark in the finals to collect a silver medal in the 200 meter free with a time of 1:51.81. Comerford's time dipped under the previous record set by Missy Franklin by nearly a full second and ranks eighth all-time.
Zach Harting finished fifth among a stellar field in the 200 meter fly final that saw the top two swimmers break the previous World Record, lowering his seed from the preliminaries with a personal best time of 1:51.57.
Kelsi Dahlia and Comerford combined with Lia Neal and Olivia Smoliga to win the United States' first gold medal of the championships in the 4x100 meter free relay. Comerford's 51.09 split on the third leg gave the US the lead, while Dahlia was able to hold off the Netherlands with a 51.40 split for the win in a time of 3:27.78.
Marcelo Acosta posted a strong performance for El Salvador in the prelims of the 400 meter free, vaulting 14 spots in the rankings to place 13th overall with a personal best time of 3:42.74.
Carlos Claverie also moved up from his seed, climbing seven spots to finish 32nd for Venezuela in the 100 meter breast with a time of 58.98.
The Cardinals will be back in action tonight at 8:30 p.m. EST for the second day's preliminaries.
