Wasike advances to NCAA Championship with personal-best and course record time
ROCK HILL, S.C. – With a personal-best time of 19:42.1, junior Dorcas Wasike became the University of Louisville cross country team's first NCAA regional champion in program history, taking first place at the NCAA Southeast Regional Friday morning at the Winthrop University Recreational Complex.
"Both teams raced very well today. This was arguably our best race of this season," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Coach (Joe) Walker and (Jenna) Wrieden have done a great job of helping these young men and women grow throughout the season and we are excited about the team finishes today."
In her fifth victory of the season, Wasike automatically qualified for next Saturday's NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisc. as she once again bested NC State's Elly Henes by over five seconds. By setting a course record time, Wasike also earned All-Region honors as she earned her second-consecutive berth in the national championship meet. Posting a mile pace of 5:17, Wasike improved upon her 6K record time by a full 12 seconds, topping the 19:54.1 she turned in at last year's ACC Championships.
"Dorcas Wasike was simply amazing today in setting a new course record and picking up the individual win," said Cowper. "She's had a terrific season and there's one more opportunity for her next week in Madison."
In the overall women's standings, the Cardinals finished 11th with 353 points as NC State took the title with 70. Freshman Ivine Chemutai completed a solid rookie campaign with a personal-best 57th-place time of 21:16.5, followed by sophomore Bailey Beery in 95th place with a mark of 21:46.6. Following them was the trio of seniors Caroline Gosser, Aurilla Wilson and Abigail Wright, who each concluded their Louisville cross country careers with Friday's race.
In the men's 10K, freshman Emmanuel Cheboson put himself in position for a possible at-large berth to the NCAAs with a ninth-place time of 30:14.5. With a mile pace of 4:51, Cheboson earned All-Region honors and turned in the race's second-best freshman time. In his final race, senior Chandler Austin just missed the All-Region team as he placed 28th with a time of 30:44.8. Sophomore Albert Kosgei posted Louisville's third top-50 performance as he finished 50th with a time of 31:18.3. Senior Daniel Fleace and freshman Ryan Johnston rounded out the Cards' scoring with solid runs.
In the overall men's standings, the Cards placed ninth with 287 points as NC State finished off a regional sweep with 83 points. Eastern Kentucky freshman James Sugira took the individual title by under a second over ACC champion Peter Seufer of Virginia Tech.
"We'll wait and see how the selection show goes later this weekend, but I believe Emmanuel has a legitimate opportunity to make the final field with his ninth-place finish today," said Cowper.
At-large selections for the NCAA Championships will be announced tomorrow evening at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com. Wasike will compete in the women's championship 6K race at 11:45 a.m. on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. If Cheboson qualifies, he will race in the men's championship 10K at 12:45 p.m.
