Louisville runner enters meet as one of the top contenders
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Junior Dorcas Wasike looks to close out her historic season this Saturday at the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisc.
Wasike will compete in the women's championship 6K at 11:45 a.m. on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. Saturday's field consists of 31 seven-person teams, including the top two from all nine regions and 13 at-large selections. Additionally, 38 individuals reached the field either through automatic qualifying or the at-large process. Defending women's champions New Mexico and men's champions Northern Arizona will look to repeat as winners.
Wasike earned her automatic berth last Friday with a first-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional, turning in a personal-best and course record time of 19:42.1, placing five seconds ahead of NC State's Elly Henes. Posting a mile pace of 5:17, she improved upon her previous 6K record time by a full 12 seconds, topping the 19:54.1 she turned in at last season's ACC Championships.
Earlier this season, she finished third overall in the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals on the same course, placing behind the New Mexico duo of Weini Kelati and defending NCAA individual champion Ednah Kurgat with a time of 19:55.5. At last season's NCAA Championships in Louisville, she became the program's first female All-American with 29th-place time of 20:05.29.
Prior to the Southeast Regional, Wasike became Louisville's first ACC champion on Oct. 26 with a time of 20:08.1 at Franklin Park in Boston, besting Henes by over eight seconds. She has earned five victories this season, including the Louisville Cross Country Classic, where she set a 5K personal record, the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic and the Tennessee Dual.
In addition to her victories, she has picked up a bevy of honors, including All-Southeast Region and All-ACC accolades. On Tuesday, she became the first Louisville female athlete to be named the USTFCCCA Southeast Regional Women's Athlete of the Year. She was also named ACC Women's Performer of the Week in all four weeks she was eligible for the award.
