Eleven Cardinals to Compete at Inaugural ACC/Big Ten Challenge

With 11 representatives, the Cardinals are tied for the second highest amount of competitors in the ACC.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Eleven members of the University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team have been selected to represent the Atlantic Coast Conference at the inaugural ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The two-day all-star meet will be hosted by Purdue at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind. with competition beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.
The Louisville women who have earned spots on the ACC roster are Mariia Astashkina, Sophie Cattermole, Mallory Comerford, Molly Fears, Alina Kendzior and Grace Oglesby. Representing the Cardinal men will be Marcelo Acosta, Nicolas Albiero, Andrej Barna, Zach Harting and Evgenii Somov. Louisville head coach Arthur Albiero will serve as an assistant coach for the ACC women.
The ACC squad will be comprised of 12 schools with a combined total of 84 swimmers and 20 divers, while the Big Ten's roster will feature 13 schools with 76 swimmers and 20 divers. Similar to the USA College Challenge, a running score with combined points earned by the women and men in each conference will be kept throughout the two-day dual meet to determine the winner.
As the 2018 ACC Swimmer of the Year, 2018 ACC Championships Most Valuable swimmer and two-time NCAA champion, Comerford headlines the ACC roster on the women's side. ACC Male Swimmer of the Year Andreas Vazaios (NC State) will also compete at the event, alongside ACC Championships Most Valuable Diver Ashlynn Peters (Virginia Tech). Louisville's two ACC Freshmen of the Year Astashkina and Albiero also highlight a talented ACC team.
Indiana's Male and Female Big Ten Swimmers of the Year Ian Finnerty and Lilly King lead the Big Ten roster, as well as Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships selections Beata Nelson (Wisconsin) and Vini Lanza (Indiana). Big Ten Freshmen of the Year Kristen Romano (Ohio State) and Ricardo Vargas (Michigan) will also be competing.

Comerford enters the meet with the top times in the nation in the 100 free (47.57), 200 free (1:42.79) and 500 free (4:40.33) while also holding the seventh-ranked time in the 50 free. She is the reigning NCAA champion in the 200 free, NCAA silver medalist in the 100 free and won titles in the 100, 200 and 500 free at the 2018 ACC Championships.
Oglesby and Astashkina also earned ACC titles in 2018, with Oglesby sweeping the butterfly events and Astashkina winning the crown in the 200 breast. Oglesby currently holds the top time in nation in the 200 fly (1:53.79) and the third-ranked time in the 100 fly (51.65). Cattermole owns the top-ranked times in the 400 IM (4:11.62) and 1650 free (16:18.07).
On the men's side, Albiero (200 back/200 fly), Barna (50 free), Acosta (1650 free), and Harting (100 fly) have each posted times that rank among the top-10 in the NCAA. Acosta leads the way with the top time in the mile (15:08.35).
Albiero won a medal of every color at last year's ACC Championships, winning the gold in the 200 fly, silver in the 100 back and bronze in the 100 fly. Somov earned a pair of ACC titles in 2018, sweeping the 100 and 200 breast.

Big Ten Network will provide live coverage for the entirety of the two-day meet. Coverage begins Saturday at 5 p.m. on BTN2Go, while Sunday's events will kick off at 10 a.m. live on BTN. Admission is free to the public.
