Cardinals Host Virginia in ACC Clash

The No.8/13 Cardinals take on the No. 7/16 Cavaliers in a two-day dual meet.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Coming off a pair of significant wins over ranked opponents, the University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams will host perennial ACC power Virginia in a two-day dual meet this weekend. The first day of action will kick off at 5 p.m. on Friday evening at the Ralph Wright Natatorium, while the second day will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
About the Cardinals
The No. 8 Louisville women downed No. 24 Tennessee 155-145 last week to remain undefeated on the season. The Cardinals were led by Mallory Comerford (100/200 free), Mariia Astashkina (100/200 breast) and Molly Fears (1-meter/3-meter) with two individual event victories apiece. Also recording wins were Grace Oglesby (200 fly), Sophie Cattermole (1000 free) and Alina Kendzior in addition to the Cardinals' victorious 200 medley relay.
On the men's side, the No. 13 Cardinals topped the No. 15 Volunteers 156-144, winning the final two events of the day to secure the meet victory. Marcelo Acosta (500/1000 free), Zach Harting (100/200 fly) and Andrej Barna (50/100 free) each placed first in both of their individual events, while Nicolas Albiero (200 back) and Jarrett Jones (200 IM) each earned victories as well. The Cardinals also swept both the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Nine Louisville women hold times that rank among the top-10 in the NCAA. Comerford and Arina Openysheva each own top-10 times in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and 500 free. Comerford leads the way with the No.1 overall time in the three of her four events and is currently the only swimmer in the nation with an NCAA 'A' cut (200 free). Additionally, Cattermole tops the standings in the 400 IM with a time of 4:11.62 and four Louisville relays are ranked No. 1 overall.
Albiero leads the Louisville men with the fifth-ranked time in the 200 back (1:45.06). Barna also ranks among the top swimmers in the 50 free, checking in at No. 10 (19.98). The Cardinals boast three top-10 relays, including the seventh-ranked 200 medley and 400 medley relays and No. 9 400 free relay.
About Virginia
The seventh-ranked Virginia women dropped their first dual meet of the season 196-138 to No. 15 Auburn at home last weekend. Redshirt junior Megan Maroney won both of her individual events, touching first in the 200 free (1:47.17) and 200 back (1:54.26). Four other Cavaliers picked up individual victories, including Eryn Eddy (100 free), Paige Madden (500 free), Kaki Christensen (200 breast) and Sydney Dusel (3-meter).
The No. 16 Virginia men upset No. 14 Auburn 200-129 to remain undefeated through three dual meets. Lewis Burras (50/100 Free), Brendan Casey (500/1000 free) and Matthew Otto (100/200 breast) recorded two individual wins apiece to lift the Cavaliers to victory.
In the national rankings, four Virginia women hold top-10 times. Maroney once again leads the Cavaliers with the sixth-ranked times in the 200 free (1:46.08) and 100 back (53.04), as well as the No. 2 time in the 200 back (1:53.78). All five relays also rank among the top-10 in the nation. On the men's side, Otto (1:59.10) and Keefer Barnum (1:59.12) are seventh and eighth respectively in the 200 breast.
Louisville vs. Virginia
The Cards and Cavaliers have only competed head-to-head once since Louisville joined the ACC. The Virginia women prevailed 224-146, while the Cardinal men beat Virginia 197.5-166.5 last season in a two-day dual in Charlottesville, Va. on Nov. 10-11, 2017. The Louisville women most recently competed against Virginia at the SMU Classic on Oct. 12-13, where the Cardinals came away with the title. The Cavaliers placed third overall at the event.
